Kitchen Remodeling in Green Valley often means working on some of the oldest master-planned homes in the Henderson area. American Nevada Corporation began planning the community in 1973, and it held its grand opening in 1978. Green Valley South followed around 1985 and Green Valley Ranch around 1994. Depending on which part of Green Valley you live in, your kitchen remodel may be replacing original late-1970s cabinets or an early-1990s builder package. Each era has its own quirks, and we plan for them up front.

Which Green Valley are you in?

Green Valley covers about 8,400 acres and is made up of many smaller villages and subdivisions, including Green Valley Estates, The Village of Fox Ridge, Whitney Ranch, Hillsboro Heights, The Fountains, Quail Ridge, Silver Springs, Legacy, Green Valley Ranch, Southfork and Sunridge Heights. The age of the subdivision is a good first clue about what is behind your cabinets.

Original sections (late 1970s and early 1980s)

Kitchens from this period were often closed off from the living area, with a wall or a pass-through between the kitchen and family room. Soffits above the upper cabinets are common. These are the homes where a layout change does the most good.

Green Valley South (mid-1980s on)

These homes tend to have more open plans than the first sections but frequently still have oak cabinets, tile counters with grout lines and fluorescent box lighting that was standard at the time.

Green Valley Ranch (1990s on)

Newer and usually larger, but most kitchens here are now about thirty years old. Cabinet hinges and drawer slides wear out, and counters and backsplashes look dated even when the boxes are fine. Refacing or a counter-and-backsplash update can work well here.

Opening up an older kitchen

A common request for homes from Green Valley's early years is to take down the wall between the kitchen and the family room or to add an island. Before we promise that, we find out whether the wall is load-bearing and what runs through it: plumbing vents, ductwork or wiring. If a wall carries load, removing it takes a beam and engineering, which changes the cost. We would rather tell you that during the estimate than after demolition.

Removing soffits and old lighting

A lot of Green Valley kitchens from the first decade have dropped soffits over the upper cabinets. Sometimes they are empty and can come out to make room for taller cabinets. Sometimes they hide ductwork or plumbing that has to be rerouted or boxed back in. Old fluorescent light boxes are another frequent upgrade: replacing them with recessed or surface LED lighting and under-cabinet lights makes a large difference in a kitchen that was designed before LEDs existed.

Near shopping and services, but still a house project

Green Valley is home to The District at Green Valley Ranch and the Galleria at Sunset, so you will not be far from a place to eat while the kitchen is torn up. We still set up the job to keep your house usable: a dust barrier around the work area, a temporary spot for the refrigerator and microwave when possible, and a clear schedule so you know when you will have water at the sink again.
