Updating Kitchens in an Older City
Kitchen remodeling in Las Vegas often starts with a house that has already lived through several owners and a few partial updates. The city was incorporated in 1911, and its population jumped from 24,624 in 1950 to 125,787 in 1970, according to Wikipedia's census history. That means a large share of the homes inside city limits were built decades before today's open-plan kitchens became the norm. A kitchen remodel here is often less about following a trend and more about undoing a closed-off galley, sagging cabinet boxes and a patchwork of countertops from different decades.
What we see in Las Vegas kitchens
Older city homes tend to share a few traits. Kitchens are smaller and walled off from the living room. Cabinets may be original or refaced once already. Flooring can be several layers deep, with vinyl over tile over something older. Lighting is often a single ceiling fixture. None of this is a problem; it simply means we plan the work after opening a few cabinet doors and looking at what is behind the walls, not before.
Our six kitchen services
- Full kitchen remodels: new cabinets, counters, flooring, lighting and fixtures planned as one project
- Cabinet replacement and refacing: new boxes where the old ones are failing, or new doors and veneer where the boxes are still sound
- Countertops: quartz, granite and other surfaces measured and installed on new or existing cabinets
- Layout and island changes: opening a wall, moving a sink or adding an island where the floor plan allows
- Backsplash and kitchen flooring: tile, stone and durable floors that handle a busy kitchen
- Kitchen updates on a budget: targeted changes like new doors, hardware, a faucet and a backsplash
Owners who plan to stay
About 56.6% of homes in the city are owner-occupied, and 86.1% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024). The median owner-occupied home value is $427,900. For a homeowner who intends to stay put, it usually makes sense to fix the things that bother you every day: not enough counter space, a sink in the wrong spot, cabinets that will not close. We help you sort the wish list into what matters now and what can wait.
Desert heat and your kitchen
Las Vegas has a hot desert climate. July averages a daytime high of 104.5 °F, and the city sees about 137 days a year at or above 90 °F. Kitchens on a west or south wall, or with a big window over the sink, can get a lot of afternoon sun. When we plan a remodel, we talk about materials that hold up to strong light and heat, under-cabinet lighting that does not add warmth, and where to place a cooktop so the cook is not standing in the hottest corner of the house at 5 p.m.
Water and fixtures
Most homes in the city get water from the Las Vegas Valley Water District, which was created to use Nevada's Colorado River allocation and draws from Lake Mead. If your current faucet or sink shows white mineral buildup, tell us during the walkthrough. It helps us recommend fixture finishes and sink materials that are easier to wipe down, and it is a good time to decide whether you want space under the sink for a filter or other water treatment.
City permits
Homes inside Las Vegas city limits fall under the City of Las Vegas, not Clark County. Some addresses with a Las Vegas mailing address are actually in unincorporated county areas, so we confirm which building department covers your property before we schedule work that moves plumbing, gas or electrical. You get a clear answer on that before anything is torn out.
Getting a written estimate
Call (725) 330-5517 or send a few photos of your kitchen. We come out, measure, look at the cabinets, floor and walls, and give you a written quote that lists each part of the job. If you would rather do the counters now and the flooring later, we can split the quote into phases.
Las Vegas Facts That Shape a Kitchen Remodel
- Postwar growth. The city's population grew from 24,624 in 1950 to 64,405 in 1960 and 125,787 in 1970, so many neighborhoods inside city limits hold homes from that era with smaller, closed kitchens.
- Owner-occupancy and value. About 56.6% of Las Vegas homes are owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value is $427,900, and 86.1% of residents lived in the same house one year earlier (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024).
- Hot desert climate. Las Vegas averages a July daytime high of 104.5 °F, about 137 days a year at or above 90 °F, roughly 4.2 inches of rain a year and about 310 sunny days.
- Water from Lake Mead. The Las Vegas Valley Water District, created by the Nevada Legislature in 1947 and operating since July 1, 1954, serves the City of Las Vegas with water brought from Lake Mead under Nevada's Colorado River allocation.

Las Vegas Questions
My Las Vegas home is from the 1960s. Can the kitchen be opened up?
Often, yes, but it depends on which walls carry load and what runs through them. On older homes we check the wall, the attic above it and any plumbing or wiring inside before promising an open layout. If a full opening is not practical, a wider pass-through or a peninsula can still connect the kitchen to the living area.
Is my address in the City of Las Vegas or unincorporated Clark County?
A Las Vegas mailing address does not always mean the city has jurisdiction. Large areas such as Spring Valley and Enterprise are unincorporated Clark County. We confirm your jurisdiction before planning any work that needs a building department's review.
Do you work in the summer heat?
Yes. Kitchen work is indoors, but deliveries, cutting and dumpster loading happen outside, so we schedule those for the morning in July and August when highs often pass 100 °F.
Do you work across the City of Las Vegas?
Yes. North Las Vegas borders the City of Las Vegas, and homes across the city are within our regular service area. Call [PHONE] to set up a visit.
