Old Town, New Subdivisions, Very Different Kitchens
Kitchen remodeling in Whitney covers a wider range of homes than its 6.81 square miles might suggest. Stowell E. Whitney, a dairy farmer, subdivided his ranch here in 1931 when the Boulder Highway was being built, and the town grew slowly for decades. Then it took off: the population went from 18,273 in 2000 to 49,061 in 2020, with new housing developments built on vacant land. One street may have a kitchen that has been patched for decades, the next one a builder kitchen that is barely broken in.
Several names, one county authority
The town was renamed East Las Vegas in 1958 and went back to Whitney in 1993. Through all of that it stayed unincorporated. Today Whitney is directly managed by the Clark County Commission, so building questions for a kitchen remodel go to Clark County. That is different from the City of North Las Vegas, and different from the City of Las Vegas. Some of the land that was originally part of Whitney is now within Henderson city limits, so it is worth confirming which side of the line your address falls on.
Floors and backsplash: where Whitney kitchens change most
In both older and newer homes here, backsplash and flooring are where homeowners often see the quickest results.
Backsplash. Many older kitchens have a 4-inch laminate or tile strip behind the counter and painted drywall above it. Newer builder kitchens often have nothing at all. A full tile backsplash protects the wall behind the range and sink and is easy to wipe clean when water spots and mineral marks build up.
Flooring. Older Whitney kitchens may still have sheet vinyl or worn tile with cracked grout. Newer homes sometimes have flooring that stops at the kitchen edge and does not match adjoining rooms. LVP and porcelain tile both hold up in a kitchen; we explain the trade-offs in cost, comfort underfoot and how each handles heavy appliances.
When the older homes need more
In a Whitney house that predates the recent building wave, a backsplash and floor may not be enough. Cabinets can sag, drawers can lose their bottoms, and the room may lack outlets near the counter. In those cases we look at cabinet replacement, new countertops and, if the floor plan allows, a layout change such as removing a soffit or widening an opening to the dining area. We check what is inside a wall before promising it can come out.
Newer builds: personalizing a builder kitchen
For homes from the recent developments, owners usually want to change the look rather than the layout: an upgraded counter, a backsplash, under-cabinet lighting, new pulls, maybe a larger sink. These are the jobs where kitchen updates on a budget make the most sense.
Ownership and household size
Census estimates put Whitney's owner-occupancy at 55.1%, with a median owner-occupied value of $329,000 and an average household of 2.90 people. If you rent, check with your landlord before any changes; if you own, we can help you prioritize.

Whitney Background
- A ranch subdivided in 1931. Stowell E. Whitney subdivided his ranch in 1931 because of the Boulder Highway's construction. The Clark County Commission officially founded the town in 1942; it was renamed East Las Vegas in 1958 and Whitney again in 1993.
- Run by the county. Whitney is an unincorporated town and census-designated place directly managed by the Clark County Commission. Some of its original land is now within Henderson city limits.
- Recent rapid growth. The population grew from 18,273 in 2000 to 38,585 in 2010 and 49,061 in 2020, with several new housing developments built on vacant land, so newer builder kitchens sit alongside much older ones.
- Housing figures. About 55.1% of homes are owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value is $329,000 and the average household has 2.90 people (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024).

Whitney Questions
Is Whitney part of Las Vegas or Henderson for permits?
Whitney itself is unincorporated and managed by Clark County, so kitchen work that needs a permit goes through the county. Some land that was once part of Whitney is now inside Henderson, so we confirm the jurisdiction for your specific address.
What floor works best in a Whitney kitchen?
LVP is popular because it is water-resistant, comfortable and reasonably priced. Porcelain tile lasts a long time and handles heavy appliances well but feels harder underfoot. We bring samples and explain costs for both.
My house is one of the newer ones. What upgrades make sense?
Usually cosmetic ones: a better counter, a full backsplash, lighting and hardware. The builder layout often works, so the budget can go to finishes instead of moving walls or plumbing.
Do you work in Whitney?
Yes. Whitney is on the east side of the valley along the Boulder Highway corridor, and it is within our regular service area for estimates and projects.
