Choosing Counters That Hold Up Here

Kitchen countertops take more daily wear than any other surface in the house, and in the Las Vegas Valley they also take hard water. Replacing tired tile or laminate counters is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make, and it can be done without touching the cabinets when the boxes underneath are level and sound.

Comparing the common materials

  • Quartz: engineered stone that does not need sealing and resists staining; it can discolor under hot pans and long, direct sun from a west window
  • Granite: natural stone with wide color variation; it handles heat well and should be resealed periodically
  • Quartzite: natural stone that is very hard and heat-tolerant, usually priced above most granite
  • Marble: beautiful but soft and easily etched by acids, including many hard-water scale removers
  • Solid surface: seamless and repairable, with integrated sinks possible, but sensitive to heat
  • Laminate: the lowest cost, with far better patterns than the 1990s versions

Forbes Home lists installed prices per square foot from about $10 to $30 for ceramic tile up to $50 to $140 for granite and quartz and $60 to $200 for marble.

Hard water on counters

The valley's water is hard. When drips evaporate, they leave white mineral spots, most visible on dark, polished surfaces around the sink and faucet. Lighter, speckled or honed surfaces hide spotting better than solid black. Wiping the area dry is the simplest fix. On natural stone, avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar or many scale removers, which can etch the surface; a pH-neutral stone cleaner is safer.

Removing the old counters

Many original North Las Vegas kitchens have ceramic tile counters set in a mortar bed, or laminate tops glued and screwed from below. Tile over mortar is heavy and dusty to remove, and it sometimes takes the drywall behind the backsplash with it, so we plan for wall patching. Laminate comes off more cleanly. Either way, we check the cabinets for level once the tops are off, since stone needs a flat, solid base.

Templating and installation

Stone and quartz counters are fabricated from a template made after the old tops are off or the new cabinets are set. The sink, faucet holes and cooktop cutouts are located during templating, so have your sink and faucet chosen beforehand. On installation day, seams are placed where they are least visible, the sink is mounted, and the plumbing is reconnected. Undermount sinks are standard with stone and quartz.

Budget

HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts countertops for a typical kitchen at $1,500 to $6,000, and HomeAdvisor lists installation at $1,870 to $4,400. Material, edge profile, number of cutouts and seams, and whether a backsplash is replaced at the same time all affect the price.

Kitchen Countertops Questions

How much do new kitchen countertops cost?

HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts a typical kitchen at $1,500 to $6,000, and HomeAdvisor lists installation at $1,870 to $4,400. Quartz and granite run about $50 to $140 per square foot installed in Forbes Home's figures. We price your kitchen after measuring it.

Is quartz or granite better with Las Vegas hard water?

Both handle it. Quartz needs no sealing and resists staining; granite needs periodic resealing but tolerates heat better. On either, lighter or speckled colors hide mineral spots better than solid dark polished surfaces.

Can new countertops go on my existing cabinets?

Usually, if the boxes are solid and can be shimmed level. We check them once the old tops are off. A water-damaged sink base should be replaced before stone goes on.

How long does countertop installation take?

Installation itself is usually a day. The wait is fabrication, which starts after templating. During that gap the sink may be disconnected, so plan for a few days without it.
